2025 IAPR Young Biometrics Investigator Award (YBIA)

Biometrics has become a vibrant and rapidly advancing area that has profoundly impacted the pattern recognition research community. Biometric systems, once largely confined to law enforcement and forensic use, are now being integrated into other application domains. Examples include smartphones, payment authentication, border security, access control, and national ID programs.
IAPR TC4 and YBIA
The IAPR Technical Committee on Biometrics (TC4) organizes and supports a number of conferences and workshops on biometrics. The 2012 edition of TC4’s flagship event, the International Conference on Biometrics (ICB) that was held in New Delhi, India, facilitated the establishment of the “IAPR Young Biometrics Investigator Award” (YBIA) through an endowment fund. The objectives and criteria of this award are similar to the prestigious IAPR JK Aggarwal award, except that it is given to outstanding scientists in the biometrics field. The award is given out in odd years. The recipient of the award is announced at either ICB or IJCB (International Joint Conference on Biometrics) where the winner is asked to deliver a plenary talk.
Prize Committee
The recipient will be recommended by a prize committee, appointed by TC4, and composed of at least three active members of TC4. One of the committee members will be the most recent recipient of the award. The committee’s recommendation will be submitted for approval to the IAPR President. The prize committee reserves the right to withhold the award if the pool of nominations does not meet the standards of excellence expected for this award.
Selection Criteria
The 2025 Young Biometrics Investigator Award (YBIA) recognizes outstanding early-career researchers who have made significant contributions to the field of biometrics. Eligible nominees must have received their doctoral degree no earlier than January 2015.
The recipient of the 2025 YBIA will be an individual who has demonstrated research excellence and depth in biometrics, with a strong record of substantial contributions to the IAPR biometrics community. Their work should reflect a major impact on the field of biometrics, influencing both academic and applied research.
The award includes a cash prize and a suitably inscribed certificate. In addition, the awardee will be invited to deliver a plenary talk at IJCB 2025, to be held in Osaka, Japan (https://ijcb2025.ieee-biometrics.org/).
Nomination Procedure
Each candidate must be supported by a nominator and at least three, and no more than five, endorsers supporting the nomination. The completed Nomination and Endorsement Forms must reach the Chair of the YBIA Committee, Dr. Vishal Patel (vpatel36@jhu.edu), no later than 15th July 2025. A copy of the forms must be sent to TC4 Advisor, Dr. Arun Ross (rossarun@msu.edu) also. The forms are attached here.
